Europe in the world

Europe in a changing world: This forum will give an overview on the geopolitical interests of the EU. Under the present economic model, Europe depends largely on importing raw-materials and resources from abroad, which is especially true for energy, while its strongly export oriented businesses seek broad global market access and cheap labour. Within this discussion the central actors, their role and strategic interest in the world will be identified by  Jürgen Wagner from the Information Office on Militarization (Germany), Susan George (former president of Attac France) and Dot Keet from the Alternative Information and Development Centre and the Transnational Institute (South Africa). This forum will be facilitated by Peter Fuchs (WEED, Germany).

The forum titled Global Europe will aim at identifying some of the key European players, their role and strategic interests in the world. What is the global agenda of the European Union? Which interests are behind it and by what means is it followed? What are its impacts, both outside and inside the EU? And what alternative visions for “Europe in the World” could we pursue? The analysis of some of the present day strategies and policies, which are being implemented to serve these interests, particularly through the “Global Europe”-strategy, free trade agreements, development aid and the militarization of foreign policy will be done by John Hilary from War on Want (UK), Lucille Daumas (Attac Morocco), Aileen Kwa from the Our World is not for Sale network (Thailand) and Carlos Aguilar, one of the coordinators of the working group on Hemispheric Social Alliance (Costa Rica). This forum will be facilitated from Alexandra Strickner (Attac Austria).
