ESU - great success!

Results of the first European Summer University of Attac

Attac's first European Summer University (ESU) was a great success. We had more than 800 registered participants form 28 countries which could choose from 200 events. In particular the bottom-up-organised seminars & workshops, the cultural programme and the closing event were the highlights of the ESU. Everybody who participated until the end felt that each beginning bears a special magic (Hesse). The ESU might well be prove to be a new step in the development of our movement.

Aula-ZuhoererInnen.JPGDuring the workshops and seminars at least 15 European working groups or networks were created. We saw a real breakthrough towards a Europeanization of Attac from below. Some highlights:

  • creation of the Attac network against water privatisation "aquattac"
  • creation of an Attac network on Latin America
  • common process to expand the consensus around the "10 principles for a democratic EU treaty" and production of common material
  • creation of a European Youth network
  • creation of a European Attac feminist space of exchange
  • creation of a European network for public railways

(for detailes reports take a look on the presentation of the closing event)

Furthermnore, for the first time ever the different Attacs organised a common strategy process which led from discussions in the different national boards to the last European Attac meeting in Morocco to a two-day strategy seminar during the ESU. Almost all Attacs in Europe participated in this seminar. About 70 Attacies were present. The conclusion of the seminar was to recommend to start two campaigns. One on the financial crisis and a second one on a "democratic and social refoundation of the EU". The campagins shall include common demands, common campaigning material in several languages and a common timetable of activities.

All groups and seminars which led to future projects of co-operation presented their results in the closing event (see http://www.european-summer-university.eu/media/documentation/results/closing_results_presentation_6_8_2008_small.ppt closing_results_presentation_6_8_2008_small.ppt or http://www.european-summer-university.eu/media/documentation/results/closing_results_presentation_6_8_2008_small.pdf closing_results_presentation_6_8_2008_small.pdf).You can also find reports and working materials from forums and workshops in our documentation section, besides many audio- and video-files.

Initiated by of irish friend Brendan Young the ESU participants supported to call for an European day of action for the respect of the Irish No around the 11th of October. All over Europe actions in front of EU-related buildings shall take place. Motto: "No means no - for a democratic Europe".
