Saarbruecken

Saarland is the second smallest federal state of Germany. 200.000 of 1 Million inhabitants of the Saarland live in Saarbruecken. Dialect and culture of the area are clearly influenced by the close neighborhood of France.

Despite its relative smallness Saarbruecken offers a wide range of culture, gastronomy and entertainment, furthermore some innovative projects in economy and science, which are well known even outside Germany.

The Saarland has a big amount of forest, which starts just outside the town boundaries. The university campus is therefor only a ten minutes ride by car/bus away from downtown and still a green place.

A guided city tour organised by the “Geography without Frontiers“ as part of the Attac-Summer University ”ESU 2008“
„Across Saarbruecken – History and development of the town not only for beginners“

The guided walk around the town gives an insight view into the more than 1000 year old development of the two towns of Saarbruecken and St. Johann into what they are today: a city on the German-French border. The castle, the Ludwigsplatz square with the church and the old town centre with the market place are on the program as well as a view into the future plus searching for historical evidence between red sandstone and high water mark.
Wed., 6 August 2008 Start: 2pm in front of the town hall St. Johann (bus / city railway to Johanneskirche or Rathaus), Duration:approx. 2-2.5 hrs
Price: 5 Euro per person (to be paid on the spot)
